The raw beauty of this region is largely preserved within Jervis Bay National Park and Booderee National Park. These untouched environments provide an incredible canvas for maternity photography, offering everything from secluded coves to native coastal forests. Because these are protected areas, they require a deep respect for the landscape and an understanding of the local ecosystem to ensure we leave no trace.
2. Commercial Photography Permits are Legally Required
To legally photograph clients within these pristine reserves, professional photographers must hold specific commercial permits. This is something I take incredibly seriously to maintain ethical standards and protect the local environment. I am proud to hold an exclusive annual commercial permit for Booderee National Park, giving my clients peace of mind and legal access to some of the most spectacular, unspoiled locations in the Shoalhaven without the risk of a session being interrupted or fined by park rangers.
3. Summer (Especially January) Brings Crowds and the Nor'easter
Jervis Bay is a highly sought-after holiday destination, and during the summer months—especially January—the beaches are bustling with tourists. Summer also brings our prevailing North East wind, which can be incredibly strong along the coast in the afternoons. To avoid the crowds and the afternoon gusts, we carefully plan our summer sessions around the weather, often opting for peaceful sunrise shoots or utilizing hidden, wind-protected locations that only a local would know.
4. Drone Photography Requires Strict Naval Airspace Approvals
Adding an aerial drone perspective to your maternity gallery creates a uniquely breathtaking, fine-art feel. However, operating a drone in Jervis Bay is not as simple as just taking off. We share our skies with the Royal Australian Navy, and much of the region falls under restricted Naval Airspace. Capturing these sweeping aerial images requires a rigorous preflight approval and unlocking process with air traffic control. Handling this extensive clearance ensures our flight is safe, legal, and completely uninterrupted.
5. Aerial Portraits are Crafted, Artful Compositions
The drone photographs you receive are not just simple snapshots; they are deliberate, artful compositions. Because of the movement of the water, the lighting, and the safety requirements of flying around clients, these final aerial artworks are often seamlessly created from two or more frames captured on the exact same day. 6. Locations are Tidal and Can Be Dangerous
The Shoalhaven coastline is dynamic and ever-changing. Many of the most beautiful rock platforms and secluded beaches are highly tidal. Without proper research and local knowledge, these areas can become incredibly dangerous due to rapidly rising tides, rogue waves, and slippery surfaces. Your safety is my absolute highest priority. I constantly monitor tidal charts and swell forecasts to ensure the location we choose is perfectly safe and easily accessible for a glowing, pregnant mum.
7. Book Early for a Highly Sought-After Location
Jervis Bay is a globally recognised, stunning location, and sunset sessions book out well in advance—especially during peak seasons. To ensure we have the perfect time and tide for your vision, it is highly recommended that you reach out to book your maternity session when you are around 15 weeks along. We typically aim to shoot between 28 and 34 weeks, when your bump is beautifully round, but before you feel too uncomfortable!
